The face you know best
I was walking through a large department store the other day when I saw a figure that looked familiar, and I stopped. The lady I had seen stopped too, and our eyes met, but then I noticed that she was wearing exactly the same clothes as I was and I realized that I was staring at my own reflection in a mirror.I mentioned this experience to my husband, and he told me of the time when on looking through a friend’s photograph album he had commented on the picture of a particularly unpleasant looking character, who in fact turned out to be himself.
Most people must have had a similar experience at one time or another, yet it is strange that anyone should ever be surprised at his appearance, for we spend much more time studying our own faces than anyone else’s.
However, in front of the mirror, a person tends to choose the pose which reflects his face in its most attractive aspect, and he has various devices for ignoring those parts of the face that displease him. If a man is worried about the length of his nose, he will probably hold his head up high in order to make it appear shorter, or if a woman’s eyes are rather small, she will probably open them wider to make them appear larger.
People also have particular ways of posing for the camera, and if you are like my husband, you will put on a ridiculous grimace which so distorts your natural looks that no one can possibly tell you that the photograph is a good likeness when it comes out.
In fact, some people refuse to have their photograph taken, or to examine themselves in a strange mirror, just because they do not want to be confirmed in their worst fears about their appearance.You may not be afraid of your appearance and may love to pose for the camera, but it is still very likely that your favourite pictures of yourself are not the ones which are most characteristic of your looks.The truth is that people never see themselves as others see them, and it can therefore come as a nasty shock when they are caught unaware by the camera or the well-concealed mirror.
