The School of the Future
Generally speaking, schools have looked the same for the last 75 years or more. Indeed, the way schools are organized has changed little either. Children are still typically grouped by age first and then by ability second. Of course, technology is now a key part of the classroom, and interactive whiteboards may have replaced the traditional chalkboards. But still the basic premise remains the same – the teacher stands at the front facing rows of desks which students sit behind.
Many people will be asking the question: What should the school of the future look like? With the technology and software that is available today, let alone in 20/30 years‘ time, the idea of a virtual classroom could become common place.
Many educationalists believe that some of the things schools do are simply obsolete now. These include losing school days either through illness or bad weather. Technology has made remote working simple. The possibilities and potential it offers – no more commuting into the office, for example – are endless. Many companies have already embraced remote and flexible working opportunities. The trend is only likely to grow in the years to come – and it could extend into the world of education too.
Of course, we should never underestimate the value of classroom conversations and social interactions. But, it is also true the technology now enables students to shoot and edit video, make a radio show, design posters and websites, blog – and interact on line as well.
The question should be asked: Is the traditional classroom now redundant? Many educationalists now believe that it‘s only a matter of time before robots – intelligent machines –begin to replace teachers in school. There will always be a place for, but intelligent machines will be able to offer a more individual and personalized experience for students overall.

Volunteering is fun!
One rainy afternoon I was sitting at home feeling so bored. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to meet people and have new experiences so I decided to start volunteering. I logged onto my computer and found a website where I could volunteer on a farm in France.
Volunteering provides so many opportunities to have fun and share great stories. My time working on a farm was a new experience for me. It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation were provided. However, it was not your typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a fourteenth century castle! I soon discovered that I was an awful farmer but it did not matter because I made some great friends and also improved my French.
However, you do not need to go abroad to volunteer. I have had plenty of adventures at home as volunteering can become a hobby. For example, I love singing so I had a good laugh waving my arms in an attempt to conduct my local choir. I did slowly improve and it felt great to conduct the choir in a concert. At university, I organized a concert for charity with my friends. It was really fun finding bands and raising money for a cause we believe in.
It is true that you feel good volunteering but there are also other advantages. I once volunteered as a steward at a charity sports event where the organizers gave me cupcakes from an expensive London bakery to thank me for my services. I also volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes to update my wardrobe.
While this is all fun, my favorite aspect of volunteering is creating and sharing stories. My terrible attempts at farming have given me hilarious stories to tell! Talking to volunteers from different countries and backgrounds has also helped me learn more about the world. I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.

What is Distance Learning and Why Is It So Important?
Distance learning – any form of remote education where the student is not physically present for the lesson – is booming thanks to the power of the Internet. In fact, there are a number of advantages of learning remotely over even traditional teaching models. As the Internet blurs the line between near and far, distance learning is set to disrupt the current paradigm of education.
Historically, distance learning described correspondence courses in which students would communicate with their schools or teachers by mail. More recently, distance education has moved online to include a huge range of systems and methods on practically any connected device.
Distance education is clearly different from regular education in terms of a student or teacher‘s physical presence. For the most part, it translates into increased freedom for both learners and educators, but it also requires higher degrees of discipline and planning to successfully complete the course of study.
The enhanced freedom of remote learning is most clearly seen in the fact that students can choose courses that fit their schedules and resources. (Teachers can do the same.) And in the case of digital learning, students can also choose the location and teaching styles that best suittheir needs.
Remote education is certainly not a magic bullet and there will always be a place for in-class learning. At the same time, distance learning still has a lot of untapped potential to reach students where they are and connect educators and learners in new ways. From increased flexibility to new learning styles, it seems that the future of learning will be as diverse in time and place as it will be in thought.

ZOOM FATIGUE
For many of us who are still working we are waking up to a calendar filled with Zoom meetings. Not only are we packing in more Zoom meetings than we probably would in a normal office setting, but it has made us all fatigued. Why are Zoom meetings so exhausting? Shouldn‘t it be less of an effort than in person meeting?
We are already exhausted from the upheaval in our lives from the pandemic and while connecting over video chat seems like a way to relieve the isolating aspect of working from home there‘s actually a disconnect happening. In an interview with BBC, Gianpiero Petriglieri explained that being on a video call requires more focus than a face-to-face chat. "Video chats mean we need to work harder to process non-verbal cues like facial expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice, and body language; paying more attention to these consumes a lot of energy".
In a face to face meeting we are able to read the room and then adjust our own behaviors accordingly. So you can imagine our brains are operating on overload trying to figure out how to read 50+ "virtual rooms" at the same time while figuring out whether to stare into the persons eyes or their baby succulent in the top left corner of the screen.
An initially scheduled 30-minute Zoom meeting can turn into an hour + meeting because of things such as poor wi-fi, frozen screens and software crashes. In the beginning of quarantine, Zoom and many other conferencing platforms were actually crashing several times a day.
Our homes have now become our work spaces and our work spaces our homes. Zoom has blurred that balance even more because we are using the platform for work and social purposes. While virtually connecting with friends and family is a great thing, it can be overwhelming after a full work day of doing so. Ask yourself the question, "could this Zoom meeting have been an e-mail?" If the answer is yes try to suggest communicating over e-mail or even just a regular phone call so you don‘t have to worry about what you or background setting look like.

SYDNEY, Australia — In a country where there has always been more space than people, where the land and wildlife are cherished like a Picasso, nature is closing in. Fueled by climate change and the world‘s refusal to address it, the fires that have burned across Australia are not just destroying lives, or turning forests as large as nations into ashen moonscapes.
They are also forcing Australians to imagine an entirely new way of life. When summer is feared. When air filters hum in homes that are bunkers, with kids kept indoors. When birdsong and the rustle of marsupials in the bush give way to an eerie, smoky silence.
"I am standing here as a traveler from a new reality, a burning Australia," Lynette Wallworth, an Australian filmmaker, told a crowd of international executives and politicians in Davos, Switzerland, last month. "What was feared and what was warned is no longer in our future, a topic for debate — it is here."
"We have seen," she added, "the unfolding wings of climate change."
Like the fires, it‘s a metaphor that lingers. What many of us have witnessed this fire season does feel alive, like a monstrous gathering force threatening to devour what we hold most dear on a continent that will grow only hotter, drier and more flammable as global temperatures rise.
It‘s also a hint of what may be coming to a town, city or country near you.
And in a land usually associated with relaxed optimism, anxiety and trauma have taken hold. A recent Australia Institute survey found that 57 percent of Australians have been directly affected by the bush fires or their smoke. With officials in New South Wales announcing Thursday that heavy rain had helped them finally extinguish or control all the state‘s fires that have raged this Australian summer, the country seems to be reflecting and wondering what comes next.
Politics have been a focal point — one of frustration for most Australians. The conservative government is still playing down the role of climate change, despite polls showing public anger hitting feverish levels. And yet what‘s emerging alongside public protest may prove more potent.
In interviews all over the fire zone since September, it‘s been clear that Australians are reconsidering far more than energy and emissions. They are stumbling toward new ways of living: Housing, holiday travel, work, leisure, food and water are all being reconsidered.
"If there‘s not a major shift that comes out of this, we‘re doomed," said Robyn Eckersley, a political scientist at the University of Melbourne who has written extensively about environmental policy around the world. ―It does change everything — or it should."
The biggest shifts, however, may not be structural so much as cultural. Climate change threatens heavy pillars of Australian identity: a life lived outdoors, an international role where the country "punches above its weight," and an emphasis on egalitarianism that, according to some historians, is rooted in Australia‘s settlement by convicts.
It‘s "a place of childhood vacations and dreams," as one of Australia‘s great novelists, Thomas Keneally, recently wrote. There‘s an absurdity even to the signs. The ones that aren‘t melted warn of wet roads. Just beyond them are trees black as coal and koalas and kangaroos robbed of life.
The fear of ferocious nature can be tough to shake. Fires are still burning south and west of New South Wales. Last month in Cobargo, a dairy and horse town six hours‘ drive from Sydney, I stood silently waiting for the start of an outdoor funeral for a father and son who had died in the fires a few weeks earlier. When the wind kicked up, everyone near me snapped their heads toward where a fire burned less than a mile away.
